Hire Information

The Trough Horse Box Bar is a fully staffed bar service.
Based in the New Forest, our standard travel radius is 20 miles. We will venture further afield with an additional mileage charge being made, including return journey. The Trough stocks a highly quaffable range of quality drink brands. The emphasis being on high quality locally sourced where possible. Please get in touch for our current drinks list.

All bookings are made by completing the Booking Form, and returning with a £175 booking fee. The Trough can serve guest numbers up to a maximum of 120 people.

Options, Options, Options!

To customise the service of the bar to suit your event, we offer three options

  1. Pay As You Go
    We operate a standard full pay bar service for you & your guests with an agreed minimum spend of £750 at the event. In the unlikely event (!) of a shortfall, the Client will make up bar spend. Card payment will be available subject to WiFi connection being provided or a clear mobile signal at the location.
  2. Tab / Token
    We will operate the bar to an agreed tab limit. The tab is to be paid in advance if it looks like the spend limit will be reached, we will let you decide whether to put more money on the tab, or
    change to a regular Pay As You Go option. If you want to ensure everyone gets a fair amount of drinks on the tab, we can provide tokens for your to give to your guests. These can be exchanged for an agreed selection of drinks, so the cost to you is set.
    The standard £750 minimum spend limit applies
  3. Corkage
    We provide the staffed horse box bar, you provide the drinks. The charge for Corkage service is £500 for a standard 6 hour evening.

Service Information

The Trough unique ambiance allows you to tailor the drinks service for your own event. The bar is operated with two members of staff, who will ensure a smooth bar service, and clear away used glasses. As The Trough operates outdoors, the standard barware used is high-quality recyclable plastic. Glass barware can be provided at a hire cost. All breakages are payable.

Licensing Act 2003

As a Licensed operation, in line with Licensing Act 2003, we take our role to ensure responsible serving as alcohol at the core of our staff training. We adhere to the national “Challenge 25” scheme, whereby anyone 25 or under will be asked for valid ID in order to be served alcoholic drinks


We reserve the right to refuse to serve anyone we believe is intoxicated.

Siting of the horsebox

The horsebox needs a flat location to be sited for your event. (2.5m x 4m) with a minimum access width of 2.5m and 2.8m high; Preferably without any nasty tight corners or low tree branches!

The box requires a standard power socket to connect into. if no power socket is available, the bar can be powered by a generator for an additional £5 per hour.


In accordance with the Licensing Act [2003], the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) for The Trough is Joanna Butler, holder of a Personal License, issued by New Forest District Council Licensing Authority.

The sale of alcohol at events is carried out either by issue of a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) for the location, or written authorisation to use a Premise License where available. All staff of The Trough have received training, and are authorised to sell alcohol in accordance with the requirements of the Act.

Our Operating Scheme is as follows:

  • We reserve the right to refuse to serve anyone we believe to be intoxicated, or is purchasing alcohol on behalf of a minor.
  • The operating hours of the bar service will be displayed, and strictly adhered to. Time will be called 15 minutes prior to the close of the bar.
  • Challenge 25 - Anyone 25 or under will be asked to prove they are over 18 by providing valid ID. The Trough will only accept a valid picture UK Driving License / UK Provisional License or valid UK passport. No ID, No alcohol. Please ensure any guests to whom this applies are aware of the requirement.
  • Jugs of still drinking water will be freely available at the bar at all times
